Better antibiotic prophylaxis for hip and knee replacement surgery?
J Arthroplasty. 2010 Oct;25(7):1078-82

435 patients with hip or knee OA scheduled to undergo total joint replacement were randomized to receive one of the three empirical iv antibiotic treatments. The study aimed to compare the efficacy of these three antibiotics in reducing methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) andmethicillin-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis (MRSE) infections. At the completion of minimum observation period of 24 months, it was concluded that the specific antistaphylococcal agents (Vancomycin and Fusidic Acid) did not provide better antibiotic prophylaxis than broad-spectrum agents (Cefuroxime) in primary joint replacement surgery (TKA or THA).
