AAOS2018: IV-TXA reduces blood loss, not transfusion rate, in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty

102 patients scheduled for reverse total shoulder arthroplasty were randomized to intravenous administration of either tranexamic acid or placebo. Patients were assessed to total blood loss, postoperative blood loss after 24 and 48 hours, hemoglobin drop after 24 and 48 hours, and transfusion requirement. Results demonstrated significantly lower blood loss - total and postoperative - in the IV-TXA group, as well as a significantly smaller drop in Hb level in the IV-TXA group compared to the placebo group. The rate of transfusion did not significantly differ between groups.
