21 patients experiencing chronic neuropathic pain were randomly assigned to receive orally administered ajulemic acid (AJA), a synthetic cannabinoid, or placebo for 7 days, with a 7-day baseline period prior to the treatment. They then underwent a 7-day washout period, followed by another 7-day baseline period, and were crossed-over to receive the other intervention for 7 days. Participants were assessed on pain reduction, mechanical hypersensitivity relief, psychometric parameters, and physical parameters. Results demonstrated significant pain reduction 3 hours after treatment and a tendency towards a reduction in mechanical hypersensitivity after the 7-day treatment in patients receiving AJA treatment, compared to patients receiving placebo treatment. Additionally, AJA treatment did not significantly alter patients' psychometric and physical parameters, even at a dosage as high as 80 mg.
