85 women scheduled for a simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty were randomized to either a standard implant or a gender specific implant. Contrary to the rationale for the gender modifications of the implant, a standard prosthesis had a significantly better fit in the distal part of the femur than the gender-specific implant. There were no additional clinical benefits associated with the gender-specific implant in 2 year observation period.
