Tantalum acetabular implants superior to monobloc titanium implants
J Arthroplasty. 2010 Aug;25(5):741-7. Epub 2009 May 26.17 patients scheduled for primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to two types of cementless monobloc acetabular components: one group had an implant made of monobloc titanium and another with porous tantalum implant. The study aimed to compare the effects of both implants on adjacent bone mineral density loss (BMD). At a 7.7 year mean follow up, the patient group with porous tantalum acetabular implants demonstrated a decreased level of BMD loss from the pre-operative levels compared with the monobloc titanium implant group.
