No difference in outcome noted with closed suction drain in shoulder arthroplasty
J Shoulder Elbow Surg. 2019 Feb;28(2):205-211

100 patients scheduled for a primary or revision total or reverse shoulder arthroplasty were randomized to receive a 400mL closed wound suction drain (placed deep to the deltopectoral interval) or no drain. Outcomes of interest included operation time, blood loss, proportion of patients who received tranexamic acid, hospital length of stay, complications, proportion of patients requiring dressing change, cost, as well as hematocrit and hemoglobin levels. Follow up was performed perioperatively. The results from the trial revealed no significant differences between the drain and no drain groups in all outcomes.
