20 patients with chronic ankle instability were randomized to the order in which the received sessions of either joint mobilization treatment, which included Maitland grade III oscillations, or no intervention. The sessions were separated by an average of 6 days. Patients were assessed for outcome following sessions, and included range of motion in ankle dorsiflexion, the Star Excursion Balance Test, and mean and standard deviation of anteroposterior and mediolateral time-to-boundary (TTB) minima during single-leg stance. Results demonstrated a significant benefit of joint mobilization on range of ankle dorsiflexion and anteroposterior TTB with eyes open, but not eyes closed. No significant differences between mobilization and no treatment were observed in SEBT results or mediolateral TTB with eyes open or eyes closed.
