Pulse lavage reduces 30-day infection rates in hip hemiarthroplasty
J Hosp Infect.2006;62(4):446-449Rates of hip fractures are rising globally, and these patients are at high risk for post-operative complications. One of these complications is infection, which can potentially be prevented by meticulous intra-operative lavage. In this study, the authors assessed the impact of pulsed lavage compared to gravity flow or bulb syringe on infection rates in patients undergoing hemiarthroplasty. They found that there were significantly lower rates of superficial, deep, and total infection in the pulsed lavage group.
