The beneficial effects of tranexamic acid (TXA) have been repeatedly shown, particularly as it relates to blood loss. TXA has now become routinely used in many centres for patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty. Furthermore, patients requiring transfusions are known to have an increased rate of wound complications. However, the direct relationship between TXA and wound complications is unclear. In this study, the authors performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of TXA vs. controls in patients undergoing primary elective total hip arthroplasty, with wound complications as the primary outcome. The authors found that there was a significant reduction in rates of wound complications in patients receiving TXA vs. controls. There were also significant reductions in blood loss and transfusion requirements. Overall, this meta-analysis provides further support for the routine use of TXA in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty.
