Reduction in C. acnes culture rate with the addition 3% hydrogen peroxide in shoulder arthroscopy

One hundred and forty patients scheduled for a shoulder arthroscopy procedure receiving standard pre-operative sterile skin preparation were randomized to receive either additional sterile preparation with 3% hydrogen-peroxide soaked gauzes or no additional sterile preparation. The outcome of interest was the incidence of positive Cutibacterium acnes (C. acnes) cultures. Results of the study found a significantly lower incidence of positive C. acnes cultures in the hydrogen peroxide group compared to the control group.
