Platelet-rich vs. platelet-poor plasma injections as adjuvant therapy in carpal tunnel surgery

Fifty patients with carpal tunnel syndrome unresponsive to conservative therapy and scheduled for a open carpal ligament release procedure were randomized to receive an injection of platelet-rich plasma or platelet-poor plasma into the incision site following the completion of surgery. The primary outcome of interest was hand grip strength in the affected hand. Secondary outcomes of interest included pain scores on the Wong-Baker Faces Scale (WBFS), the functional and symptoms sub-scores of the Boston Carpal Tunnel Symptom Questionnaire (BCTSQ), time to return to work and the Southampton Wound Assessment Scale (SWAS) for surgical wound healing. Follow up occurred 6 weeks post-operation. Results revealed no significant differences between the two groups in hand grip strength, time to return to work and SWAS scores. No significant improvements were observed in WBFS scores, BCTSQ function scores and BCTSQ symptom scores in either group.
