Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2020 May;478(5):1016-1018.

One thousand six hundred and fifty-nine patients scheduled for a primary knee arthroplasty surgery were randomized to undergo said procedure with the use of antimicrobial drapings or no antimicrobial drapings. The primary outcome of interest was the contamination rate. Secondary outcomes of interest included the association between factors such as sex, age, type of implant and duration of surgery on contamination rate. Results revealed a significantly lower contamination rate in the antimicrobial draping group compared to the control group. A significantly lower rate of contamination was observed in female patients. Also, separation of the drape from the skin by more than 10mm was associated with an increased rate of contamination.
