COA 2020: Effect of Liposomal Bupivacaine vs Ropivacaine in Interscalene Block for TSA patients

One hundred and fifty-six patients undergoing total shoulder arthroplasty were included in this study comparing interscalene brachial plexus blockade with liposomal bupivacaine and ropivacaine or ropivacaine alone. Data was obtained from surgeries performed between June 1st 2017 and September 1st 2019. Outcomes of interest included post-operative pain scores, opioid consumption, length of hospitalization, and patient reported function. Results revealed significantly favourable post-operative pain scores from the day of surgery to post-operative day 1 in the liposomal bupivacaine group. Otherwise, no significant differences were observed between the two groups.
