Osteoarthritis
Intraarticular Hyaluronic Acid Superior to Mepivacaine for Improving Pain and Function of Hip OA
Arthritis Res Ther. 2009;11(6):R183.

Forty-two patients with hip osteoarthritis were randomized to receive an intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid or local anesthetic (2% mepivacaine) for improving function and relief of pain. The primary outcome of interest was the Lequesne index. Secondary outcomes of interest include pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug consumption, global physician assessment, and global patient assessment. Outcomes were assessed at 3- and 6- months post-injection. Study results revealed significantly favourable Lequesne index scores and VAS pain scores in the hyaluronic acid group compared to the mepivacaine group, at both 3- and 6-months post-injection. Otherwise, no significant differences were observed between the two groups.
