Similar Clinical Outcomes with Intra-Articular PRP and HA Injections For Treatment of Hip OA
Orthopedics. 2013 Dec;36(12):e1501-8.One hundred patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA) were randomized to receive 3 consecutive injections of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or hyaluronic acid (HA) once every two weeks. The outcomes of interest included the Harris Hip Score (HHS), pain on a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) as well as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) consumption. Outcomes were assessed at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-treatment. Results revealed no significant differences in HHS and VAS pain scores at all time points between PRP and HA treatments; however, a significant improvement was found for both groups at follow-up of 1-3 months. Also, NSAID consumption was significantly reduced over time in both groups.
