Clinical benefit of intraarticular saline as a comparator in clinical trials of knee osteoarthritis

Thirty-eight studies comparing intra-articular (IA) saline to either IA hyaluronic acid, IA corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) were included in this meta-analysis. The primary outcome was the short-term (3 months or less) and long-term (6-16 months) pain reduction. Treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were also extracted and categorized as either serious or non-serious.
