20 patients scheduled for a primary reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament with a hamstring tendon graft were randomized to the technique of tibial end fixation with either a press fit conical bone cylinder or an interference screw fixation. The press-fit bone plug significantly surpassed the bioresorbable interference screw fixation in decreasing the proximal tibial bone tunnel enlargement at a 3 month assessment. After 3 years, significant differences were found favouring press-fit fixation for the proximal and middle portions. No significant differences were reported in the clinical outcomes between the two treatment groups.
