55 patients (n=56 hips) with a non-inflammatory arthropathy of the hip were randomized to undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) with either an alumina ceramic-on-ceramic articulation or a ceramic-on-polyethylene articulation. At a median follow-up of 8 years, functional outcomes were similar between groups, but the total wear was significantly lower in patients receiving ceramic-on-ceramic articulations compared with ceramic-on-polyethylene articulations.
