100 patients undergoing total hip replacement were randomized to either piriformis sparing minimally invasive procedure or current standard posterior approach. The results of this double blind study indicated that there was a trend towards superior function at 2 week follow-up. However, these trends diminished over time resulting in no significant long-term differences in functional outcomes. Surgeon ratings indicated that the piriformis sparing procedure was significantly more difficult than the standard approach.
