Antibiotic prophylaxis for wound infections in total joint arthroplasty
J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2008 Jul;90(7):915-9Approximately 1-5% of wounds from total knee arthropalsty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) go on to develop a superficial or deep infection. The authors of this review identified and reviewed the evidence around antibiotic prophylaxis for THA and TKA wound infections. In addition to systematic review of 26 studies on various types of prophylaxis, a meta-analysis of 7 of the included articles found that antibiotic prophylaxis reduced the absolute and relative risk of wound infection.
