J Bone Joint Surg Br. 2008 May;90(5):584-91

100 patients, aged between 50 and 80 years, with osteoarthritis of the knee joint requiring total knee replacement (TKR) were randomized to the surgical approach, either a minimally invasive mid-vastus approach or a standard approach. Minimally invasive surgical approach led to better functional outcomes (mean function score, mean total score, mean oxford score) at earlier time point of 9 months, with a greater and accelerated recovery of flexion, but this difference was lost at a later final follow up of 24-36 months.
