114 patients with non-specific low back pain of more than 12 weeks duration were randomized to receive physiotherapy according to intensive group exercise training protocol or usual dutch guideline based physiotherapy. No significant differences between both treatment groups on any of the outcome measures were detected during the complete follow-up period, with only one exception. After 26 weeks, the protocol group showed a temporary comparative reduction in pain intensity than the guideline group; this difference was absent at 52 week follow up.
