Re-rupture risk of Achilles tendon higher with nonoperative than surgical treatment
Am J Sports Med. 2008 Sep;36(9):1688-94. Epub 2008 Jul 2183 patients with acute Achilles tendon rupture were randomized to nonoperative treatment by functional bracing or minimally invasive surgical treatment followed by tape bandage. All patients were allowed full weightbearing during recovery period. A clinically important, but statistically insignificant difference in the risk of complications was observed in the rerupture rates, with minimally invasive surgical treatment having a lesser rerupture rate than the nonoperative treatment for acute Achilles tendon ruptures.
