It has often been common practice to apply closed suction drainage following Total Joint Arthroplasty (TJA) to theoretically decrease the risk of hematomas and infection. This theory has recently come under scrutiny resulting in many RCTs on the subject. The current Meta analysis aims to determine based on these RCTs, the pros and cons of this technique. Pooling of the results indicated that closed suction drainage in fact has no major benefits and results in a greater need for transfusions.
