Combined cryotherapy and compression improves Achilles tendon microcirculation

60 healthy volunteers were randomized to receive three 10-minute intermittent applications of either combined cryotherapy/compression or cryotherapy alone. Improved tendon oxygenation resulted from the tendon preconditioning by combined cryotherapy and compression with significantly increased tendon oxygen saturation during recovery, in comparison to cryotherapy alone. Both the treatments led to a significant reduction in tendinous venous outflow.
