Mucolythic agent reduces time, blood loss, and difficulty during lumbar revision surgery

30 patients undergoing revision surgical procedures of the lumbar spine were randomized to a mucolythic agent or normal saline, as an adjuvant to ease tissue dissection during peridural fibrosis dissection. One week postoperative results demonstrated that the use of the mucolythic agent, MESNA, reduced surgical time, intra-operative blood loss and decreased the difficulty of the surgical dissection, measured by a blinded surgeon.
