Arthroscopy. 2008 Dec;24(12):1373-80. Epub 2008 Sep 30

116 patients undergoing ACL reconstruction with a quadruple semitendinosus-gracilis (STG) graft, were randomized to either one of three adjunctive femoral tunnel intervention groups; platelet concentrate(PC), bone plug(BP), platelet concentrate and bone plug or a control group with no adjunctive intervention. The results demonstrated that use of the bone plug was effective in preventing femoral tunnel widening and that use of a platelet concentrate resulted in a lower MRI signal intensity. The combined use of both the BP and PC did not have a synergistic effect on the graft healing process. Future studies are required to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of the platelet concentrate.
