59 patients without comorbidities, undergoing their first lumbar disc surgical procedure, were randomized to receive either clinic based therapy with a behavioral component or a home-based exercise therapy. The results from this study indicated no differences at 3 months; however, at 1 year post-operative follow-up, the back pain and quality of life was significantly lower in the home based program. It should be noted that the activity levels at 1 year follow-up were greater in the clinic based group.
