ACL reconstruction: Hamstring autografts reduce anterior knee pain and extension deficits
BMJ. 2006 Apr 29;332(7548):995-1001. Epub 2006 Apr 7

This meta-analysis identified 24 studies (18 merged cohort studies) that compared bone-patellar tendon-bone autografts with hamstring autografts in patients who required anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. A total of 1512 patients (747 in hamstring autograft treatment group and 765 in control patellar tendon graft group) were identified. Results from this analysis indicate that the use of the hamstring autograft resulted in less morbidity (anterior knee symptoms and extension deficits) compared to the patellar tendon autograft. There was no evidence that patellar tendon autografts provided superior stability compared to four strand hamstring autografts.
