Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2006 Apr;445:216-21
This meta-analysis identified 6 prospective controlled trials that compared an early functional rehabilitation protocol to traditional immobilization methods in the post-operative rehabilitation of surgically repaired Achilles tendon ruptures. A total of 315 patients were identified from these studies (156 in immobilization group and 159 in early functional group). The results from this analysis indicate that an early functional rehabilitative protocol results in improved patient satisfaction, a reduction in minor complications and no increased rate of tendon re-rupture or infection.
