166 patients with knee meniscus disease who were undergoing ambulatory arthroscopic knee meniscectomy were included in a study to test the effects of preoperatively administered celecoxib compared to a placebo. Patients in the experimental group were administered 400 mg of celecoxib 1 hour before surgery, and 200 mg of celecoxib at their first request post-operation. The control group received placebo at both times. Results collected in the 24 hours after surgery demonstrated that the celecoxib group consumed significantly less opioids than the placebo group, experienced fewer opioid related adverse events, and felt less pain overall.
