116 patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomized to either receive a combination of interferential (IF) stimulation and patterned muscle stimulation or low-current transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS). The results indicated that patterned muscle stimulation was effective in reducing patients' pain and stiffness, while improving function. These effects were noted as early as 2 weeks after treatment had been initiated.
