Int Orthop. 2012 Aug;36(8):1575-81. Epub 2012 Apr 15

30 patients undergoing THA were randomized to a conventional cemented THA or a secondary cement procedure using a cement injection stem to determine the effect of the novel technique on embolic events. The results from transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE) from six predetermined measurement points during the surgical procedure indicated that the incidence and severity of embolic events was greater using a conventional cemented technique. Indicating that the novel procedure using the cement injection stem may reduce pulmonary embolism associated with cemented THA.
