Protein/Carbohydrate supplementation increases muscle mass and strength during rehab
J Orthop Res. 2006 Nov;24(11):2114-2330 patients with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury were included in this study, exploring the effectiveness of nutrient supplementation in improving hypertrophy and strength of the quadriceps muscle during rehabilitation. Patients were randomized to take protein and carbohydrate (PC), Isocaloric-Carbohydrate (IC), or Placebo (PL) after each of the 36 assigned training sessions. Over 12 weeks, the PC group demonstrated significantly greater hypertrophy and peak torque of the quadriceps muscle compared to the other groups.
