Physical therapy as effective as hip core decompression for femoral head osteonecrosis
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2006 Dec;88(12):2573-82.38 patients (38 hips) with femoral head osteonecrosis and sickle cell disease were randomized to undergo physical therapy alone or physical therapy combined with hip core decompression. After a mean follow-up of 3 years, the difference in hip survival rate and Modified Harris Hip Scores between the two intervention groups was not clinically significant. Physical therapy alone appears to as effective as hip core decompression combined with physical therapy at improving hip function and postponing additional surgical interventions in patients with sickle cell disease and femoral head osteonecrosis.
