140 patients, under 70 years of age requiring total hip arthroplasty, were randomized to receive an implant with an alumina-alumina (ceramic on ceramic) bearing surface or a metal-polyethylene bearing surface. The results from a long-term evaluation (9-15 years) indicated that the alumina-alumina bearing surfaces resulted in a significantly lower revision rate and significantly less wear-related complications when compared to metal-polyethylene bearing surfaces, making the alumina-alumina bearing surface an appropriate option for young and active patients requiring total hip arthroplasty.
