83 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip were randomized to receive a ceramic-on-metal or metal-on-metal total hip replacement to compare functional and metal ion concentrations. The results of this study at the final 12 month follow-up demonstrated that ceramic-on-metal and metal-on-metal hip replacements result in comparable cobalt serum levels, chromium serum levels, and functional outcome scores.
