THA: Highly crosslinked polyethylene reduces wear but has no effect on other outcomes
Clin Orthop Relat Res. 2012 Nov;470(11):3083-93. doi: 10.1007/s11999-012-2400-x60 patients (61 hips) undergoing unilateral total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive polyethylene (PE) or highly crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) cemented cups combined with a cemented stem. Over 10 years, the XLPE cups demonstrated significantly reduced three-dimensional wear than the PE cups. The XLPE group also tended to have superior stem fixation than the PE group. However, there was no difference between the two groups for cup migration, bone mineral density, radiolucencies, functional scores, and revision rate.
