95 patients completed 12 weeks of strength training after undergoing surgical fixation for a hip fracture (Phase I). At 24 weeks post-fracture patients who had completed Phase I were randomized into two groups (Phase II). They were randomized to either complete an additional 12 weeks of strength training or discontinue the training, in order to measure the effect of extra training on hip function. Following functional assessments at 36 weeks after the fracture, results indicated that patients who continued with the strength training had improved strength and endurance compared to those who had discontinued training. However, patients hit the ceiling in balance during the initial training so no further improvements were noted.
