Tranexamic acid is safe and effective in reducing blood loss in TKA
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2012 Jul 3;94(13):1153-9. doi: 10.2106/JBJS.K.00873The meta-analysis took results from 15 RCTs (837 patients), published before May 2011, to study the efficacy and safety of Tranexamic acid compared to a placebo in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The results found that Tranexamic acid significantly reduced blood loss, number of blood transfusion units, and number of patients needing transfusion. It also did not change prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and the prevalence of deep-vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.
