36 patients undergoing distraction osteogenesis greater than 2 cm were randomized to undergo treatment with or without low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS), to determine what impact LIPUS had on bone healing in these patients. Following assessments made every 3 to 4 weeks, results indicated that LIPUS had a positive effect on healing time and was not associated with an increased risk of complications during callus distraction.
