110 patients with femoral shaft fractures were randomized to receive intramedullary nailing of the femur with the use of a trochanteric portal or a piriformis fossa entry portal. The results of the 12-month study indicated that the two studied interventions did not differ in terms of hip function, muscle strength, and analog pain scale values. It was also found that at 6-month follow-up the trochanteric portal group displayed better chair stand test scores; however, the difference between the two groups was not significant at 12-month follow-up.
