ISAKOS: Knee effusion: Short-term improvement in clinical outcomes with joint aspiration

146 patients with acute knee joint effusion following trauma were randomized to receive either joint aspiration treatment or not to evaluate differences in clinical outcomes and safety. Results indicated that there were significant short-term improvements in all clinical outcomes, although no difference was found after 2 weeks. In addition, complication rates were statistically comparable between groups. However, the 2 patients who developed infections were from the joint aspiration group.
