Alendronate improves bone mineral density after total knee arthroplasty
J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2003 Nov;85-A(11):2121-696 women undergoing total knee arthroplasty were randomized to receive oral alendronate at a dose of 10 mg/day for six months, or not. The bone mineral density in the distal part of the femur and proximal part of the tibia was determined preoperatively and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively. Significant decreases in density were seen in the control group at 6 and 12 months, though patients receiving alendronate experienced significant improvement in bone mineral density.
