96 patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty were randomized either to donate two units of blood (autologous donors) or to not donate any blood (nondonors). Patients were compared in terms of blood loss volumes, hemoglobin measurements, and transfusion rates over 6 weeks. No benefits were seen for autologous donation patients, and they were more likely to receive an autologous transfusion than nondonors.
