Phys Ther. 2011 Jan;91(1):37-47. Epub 2010 Nov 18

104 patients with subacromial shoulder pain for at least three months were randomized to either a supervised exercise (SE) program or a group receiving radial extracorporeal shock-wave therapy (rESWT). Recent randomized trials indicated that SE interventions provided better short and medium term outcomes for this population. The results from this study, however, did not show superior outcomes at long term follow-up, with both groups showing improvements in both pain and functional scores. There was an increased number of patients who had resumed work in the SE group, though this was not significant.
