122 patients with noninflammatory arthritis were randomized to undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) with either highly crosslinked polyethylene (HXLP) or standard polyethylene, to compare the in vivo wear rates between the two groups. After mean 5.5 years follow-up, results indicated that highly crosslinked polyethylene used in total hip arthroplasty resulted in significantly less two-dimensional wear, three-dimensional wear, and volumetric wear compared to standard polyethylene.
