THA: LIA cocktail safely improves pain, early function and opioid consumption

82 patients with osteoarthritis, scheduled to undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) were randomized to receive either a 60 mL intraarticular infiltration analgesia (LIA) cocktail or a saline equivalent to determine the effectiveness and safety of this drug administration on pain, opioid consumption and range of motion. Results indicated that the LIA cocktail was successful in further reducing pain, opioid consumption, and the incidence of side effects compared to the control group. Furthermore, range of motion (hip flexion) was significantly increased earlier in the LIA group compared to the placebo group. Lastly, safety was comparable to the control group.
