Resurfacing hip arthroplasty: results in higher bone mineral density post-operatively
J Arthroplasty. 2013 Aug;28(7):1177-84

82 patients, under the age of 65, who required primary total hip replacement due for osteoarthritis were randomized into one of two groups: resurfacing hip arthroplasty (RHA), or a metal-on-metal THA to compare the effects of these treatments on bone mineral density. The results showed that the resurfacing arthroplasty group had significantly higher mean BMD scores at 12 months, and 24 months after the surgery occurred. This finding supported the notion that RHA is better at preserving BMD post-operatively, than current conventional techniques.
