58 patients over the age of 18, with mild-moderate OA of the knee, were placed into a cross-over study testing the effects of tart cherry juice on knee OA. Participants were advised to drink two 8oz bottles (of either placebo or tart cherry juice) every day (1 in the morning, 1 in the evening), for 6 weeks. Once this section of treatment was completed, participants were given a 1 week flush out period and then switched to either a placebo or cherry juice treatment (opposite of the treatment they started with), where they then followed the same guide lines for another 6 weeks. Results showed that cherry juice improved WOMAC scores from baseline, but that there was no statistically significant difference between cherry juice treatment and the placebo (when comparing 6 week follow ups).
